Join The Orianne Society’s Dr. Eric Teitsworth for a presentation about turtles in the Hudson Valley. The Orianne Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of reptiles, amphibians, and their habitats.

Globally, more than 50% of turtle species are threatened with extinction and the species inhabiting NY are no exception. Southeastern NY is home to an incredible diversity of turtles. While species like the federally-protected bog turtle and state-protected Blanding’s turtle are heavily monitored and researched, species like the box turtle, spotted turtle, and wood turtle have received far less attention and are far less common than they once were. Turtles face numerous threats, especially habitat destruction, road mortality, poaching, disease, and climate change.

In this talk, Eric will discuss the ecological importance of turtles in the Hudson Valley, highlight the species that The Orianne Society is focused on protecting, and explain what you can do to help turtles in your community, including habitat restoration programs available through the NRCS.
