By The Book
Opening May 16, 2026
The Olive Free Library Association is pleased to present By The Book, a book arts exhibition featuring the work of nine artists who have focused all or some of their art practice on creating visual art books. Curated by Olive Library exhibition committee member Linda Schultz, the exhibition runs from May 16 through June 27, 2026. Public events include an opening reception on Saturday, May 16 from 3 – 5 pm, and a hands-on bookmaking workshop on Saturday, May 23, 1 – 3 pm.
Linda Schultz says about this exhibition, "The book artist is one who creates books as works of visual art including: fold-out books, accordion books, sculptural books, and hand bound books. These types of books can be made with paper, fabric, or mixed media. The book artist treats the book as a creative object – it can be part sculptural, part print, and part narrative. The book is the canvas that communicates ideas, stories, or emotions in a unique way."
Schultz continues, "There is a fascination with books that remains a mystery. Perhaps books bring back childhood experiences – storytelling can be magical. Artist books go beyond just the written word. They offer a different kind of engagement than a regular book or gallery piece. The viewer is engaged in control, by choosing the pace, the order, what to look at, what not to look at. This control creates a sense of personal investment in the experience."
Featured artists: Jocelyn Bergen, Lisa Maria Burgess Noudéhou, Lynne Buschman, Sophia Kramer, Denise Giardullo, Diane Jones Godfrey, Sheryl Levine, Linda Schultz, and Ruby Silvious.

Jocelyn Bergen has been making limited-edition book art for many years, enjoying the narrative potential of folded paper structures, and small books that can fit in your pocket, so you can share them with other people. With BAs in English and Fine Art from UC Berkeley, Jocelyn studied printmaking, painting, and graphic arts processes, and then has worked as a graphic designer and production artist, digital typographer, and interaction designer, all of which have informed her often digitally produced yet fully hand-made multiples. Ever fascinated by narrative structures and book forms, various Bay Area book arts classes led her to work with the Pacific Center for the Book Arts, and then the San Francisco Center for the Book. At SFCB she participated as a board member, and taught workshops. Since relocating to the Hudson Valley, Jocelyn teaches book art, decorated paper, paper sculpture, and printing classes at the Neighborhood Print Studio in Kingson, NY . zephyrinepress.com

The Olive Free Library has created a platform to show and sell the art of regional artists, both established and emerging. This provides art enthusiasts a way to view, appreciate, and purchase local and regional artworks. The rural town of Olive does not have a cultural center, so the library converted its spacious, light community room into a gallery space. The response from both artists and the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
