The Self/Other: Masked and Unmasked

Opens September 19

The Olive Free Library Association is pleased to present The Self/Other: Masked and Unmasked, a multi-media exhibition featuring the work of nine artists focusing on individuality, identity, and perceptions by others. Curated by Olive Library exhibition committee member Susan Shaftan Perrin, the exhibition runs from September 19 through November 7, 2026. Public events include an opening reception on Saturday, September 19 from 3 – 5 pm, and a hands-on mask making workshop on Saturday, October 17, 1 – 3 pm.

Susan Shaftan Perrin says about this exhibition, "According to Merriam-Webster, Self: the union of elements (such as body, emotions, thoughts, and sensations) that constitute the individuality and identity of a person; Other: one that is psychologically differentiated from the self, one considered by members of a dominant group as alien, exotic, threatening, or inferior (as because of different racial, sexual, or cultural characteristics), being the one (as of two or more) remaining or not included; Mask: a cover or partial cover for the face used for disguise, a grotesque false face worn at carnivals or in rituals, a sculptured face or a copy of a face, something that serves to conceal or disguise; and Unmask: to reveal the true nature of, expose."

Susan continues, "How do we perceive ourselves? How do we define another? Do I see myself differently than you see me? How am I different from you or conversely, how are we the same? When we mask our face (whether through make-up, pretend emotions, KN-95's, balaclavas, etc.), what are we hiding or hiding from? When we take that mask off, what is revealed? Do we have to smile for the camera? This exhibition is a multi-media exploration of our humanity through the face."

Featured artists : Vicki Clausman Alvarez, Bryan Perrin, Susan Shaftan Perrin, Mor Pipman, Frank Saragnese, Aleksandra Scepanovic, Carol Seitz, Suprina Troche, and John Walter.

Artist Bios:

The Olive Free Library has created a platform to show and sell the art of regional artists, both established and emerging. This provides art enthusiasts a way to view, appreciate, and purchase local and regional artworks. The rural town of Olive does not have a cultural center, so the library converted its spacious, light community room into a gallery space. The response from both artists and the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
